Satyajit Ray who is a legend in Bollywood history. He was the greatest filmmaker of the 20th century. Was born in Kolkata city and started his career as a commercial artist. Ray directed 36 feature films and documentaries. He was also a music composer. He was awarded an honorary degree by Oxford University. His first film was Pather Panchali in 1955 that won 11 international awards. He did any popular films like Aparajito and Sour Sansar.
Satyajit Ray received many awards in his career including 32 Indian national film Awards, a Golden Lion, a Golden Bear, 2 Silver Bears, and many International awards in international film festivals. In 1992 the Government of India honored him with Bharat Ratna (highest civilian award).
Satyajit Ray was from a very good background. His grandfather Upendrakishore Ray was writer philosopher and publisher and a leader in Brahmo Samaj. Ray studied at Ballygunge Government High School, Calcutta. after completing schooling he went to the Presidency College, Calcutta to complete his BA in economics. Though his interest was always in fine art his mother suggests him to join Visva Bharati University at Shantiniketan.
Ray started work at D.J. Keymer, a British-run advertising agency, as a Junior Visualiser and his salary was 80 rupees per month. Here he learned about graphic design. Ray also worked for Signet Press, a new Publishing House started by DK Gupta. Ray founded Calcutta Film Society in 1947. They screened many foreign films, many of which Ray watched and seriously studied.

In 1949 Ray married to Bijoya Das. The couple had a son Sandip who is Now a Film director. His father Sukumar Ray was a Bengali Humorous Poet and mother Suprabha Ray was Housewife.
